We're moving!

January 29th, 2009

Hi folks!
Today we closed the door to the studio here in Waldstrasse, being that we're also moving soon, to a larger abode, where it will be possible to house living quarters and studio in the same appartment! When we get set up, the adventures in tone and colour shall continue. I will keep you posted...

While my goulash gently steeps

July 17th, 2007

Pardon the lengthy pause between posts. The summer keeps you on your toes... It's painting weather!
Not quite what you think though, the studio could use some brightening up -the floor is mere chipboard, and we wanted to throw a coat of lacquer on it to make it a bit hardier. As we've had some decent weather too, where one can leave the windows open, I thought I'd take advantage of the opportunity to paint the floor.

Unfortunately you can see the dirt more now, but at least it comes off with less protest. Oh, and it simply looks great.

I also feel like I'm getting somewhere with my tile painting. After a few weeks having to wait while "outside influences" postponed my classes, I've finally finished putting the glazes on the pieces. Well, one piece was broken in the biscuit firing process, (1/52 isn't bad) but it's been modelled again and will hopefully be ready in a couple of days. There are some pictures of the current stage, you can finally see what the picture is, but don't freak out, the pink does NOT stay that colour. I'm still amazed at how the glazes don't look anything like they should before firing.

On a last note, there are also a couple of updates in the traditional section (a new pot) and I was commissioned to do a wedding card with a bit of a twist, which you'll find under greeting cards

Work in progress

May 29th, 2007

Thanks to yet another religious holiday, I have had to postpone the firing of my latest piece:

but at least I managed to file off all of the paper and smooth the edges. The leaves have also been defined that they may stand out a bit. Now comes the tricky part where I have to transport everything to the place where the kiln is and actually leave it there and just hope and pray that the people don't bust it. That would make me mad and sad... to put it lightly.
On a last note, do check out www.meinprof.de and see the new Prof Poldi in action.

A Special Gruss

May 22nd, 2007

I'd like to first of all send out a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Thomas, valuable friend and one of my greatest supporters here in Germany - I wish you all the best! Ah yes, I'm sorry I haven't finished your present yet, so a Birthday Poldi will have to do -He's showing off a part of the present, which you can hopefully pick up when you're here later this week:

Studio update...
Baumfisch/Treefish is finito, but no picture yet... aaaand, I'm working on this:

If it didn't stick to the table indefinitely, and if it doesn't shatter, this will be a tile mural of sorts. I was thinking something for a bathroom, with a wrap around feature in case someone has very bendy walls, like we do! My inspiration was a ghost gum I would see when waiting for the bus to school back in the 8th grade. This gum tree can be found across the street from the fish and chip shop on queen street, Altona Meadows, Victoria.
Useless fact: It's also about six kilos of red clay. I had fun smearing it on the table. I imagine it will not be fun getting it off.

Back to the drawing board...

May 16th, 2007

After a failed experiment with the armature and all that, I've decided that keeping it simple (stupid) really is the best way to go, so I redesigned the snake with the intention of cutting it out of one piece of metal. How I will manage that is yet to be seen, but miracles do happen.

Otherwise I'm busy with birthday presents and hauling out some old paintings, practising large scale drawing again, and lots of other cool and very very covert operations! Yay! In all seriousness, I'm keeping busy. Hope you're all well!

Almost done

May 6th, 2007

Just a super quick update. The lillies are almost complete:

-Sorry about the crummy picture, it's hard to photograph mirrors without being in the picture!
I also took a better picture of the car grill snake:

Anyhoo, that's all for now. Thanks for reading!

Studio off to a good start!

May 4th, 2007

I'm becoming a pro at running up and down stairs. Today we had our first mutual session in the studio -Mel didn't have the time until yesterday, where we painted and sculpted in a pleasant atmosphere. I robbed myself of the stereo in the kitchen at home, (which I don't use much anymore since we got a dishwasher) so we have music now. Otherwise we have pretty much everything. A lamp in the kitchen "cave" was also quickly arranged, and I found some chairs at a great price at the second hand shop -only to realise that they were very short for an 80cm table. Darn standard sizes.
Aside from looking like a kid at the dinner table (I seriously considered getting the phone book to sit on) I could at least be happy that I can stand at my easel. We did some exercises in figure drawing with charcoal and conte crayons later. I am happy to pass on what I learned in TAFE, as teaching something is the best way to remember it oneself.
So for now some pictures:

I'm working on a snake for Ingmar's dad's car, (the white thing that looks like a spine) and still experimenting with how I'll be doing it. At the moment I'm making an armature out of clay, so I have fewer problems transporting and shaping the snake. I also plan on covering the little beasty with sheet metal so that it can be mounted on the car and not be damaged, though at the moment my main concern is that it will be stolen... However, who knows if this will even work? I could simply cut the shape of a snake out of the metal and somehow tack it onto the grill, but I'm liking the idea of a 3D snake.

Mel's corner being put into use.

Something to think about: If you cut up a mirror, do you still get bad luck?
